Valentines Cupids
Can you imagine the Valentines Day without valentines cupids. Cupid is represented as a naked boy who holds a bow and arrows in his hands. People still believe that the target of Cupid’s bow and arrows will madly fall in love and his loving knots lead the people to the wedding ceremony.Knowing this how can you leave Cupid behind on this day?
A legend says that Cupid felt in love with mortal girl whose name was Psyche. Cupid’s mother, the goddess Venus, was jealous and asked her son to punish the maiden. But he felt in love too and gave his heart to Psyche. It was not allowed for her to look at Cupid because she was mortal. But her sisters convinced her to look at him only for a second. Psyche did so and was punished from Cupid to spend the rest of her life alone.
The girl desperately started looking for her love and when she came across the temple of Venus, the goddess tried to trouble her and asked her a series of very hard tasks. But Psyche did not give up. Her last task was the hardest one for the girl. She was handed over a box and was told to go to the underworld to gather the beauty of Pluto’s wife, Proserpine. She was strictly prohibited to open the box. But it is in the human nature to do exactly the things which are prohibited. Psyche opened the box and as a punishment went into a deep sleep. When Cupid found his love lying lifeless he decided to forgive her. When Venus saw his mad love for the girl she forgave her too and was made goddess by gods.
In Greece, Cupid is known as Eros. Now do you understand why so many people choose Cupid as a special Valentines Day gift? If you plan to lead your girlfriend to the altar then probably you will choose the Cupid for the next Valentines Day, too.
