Valentines Day History

Do you know the story about Valentines day?
It is a day of the year when we can express our love to the people we appreciate. The day when we send flowers, “valentines’ cards” with love messages and nice gift to the person we want to share the rest of our live with.

It is believed that St.Valentine was a Christian pries at the time of Emperor Claudius II. The Emperor’s soldiers didn’t want to join his military. He believed that the soldiers didn’t want to leave their families. That’s why he prohibited all engagement and marriages in his lands. But St Valentine secretly married couples and when the Emperor heard that, he ordered the priest to be beaten to death and to have his head off. In the prison he met the only daughter a jailor had and fold in love with her. With the strength of his love he made a miracle. The girl was blind but when her father gave her the last letter which the Saint wrote to her, expressing his everlasting love, the miracle happened and he healed her blindness. He signed the letter with “From your Valentine”. The time kept this phrase and in our days we sign our “valentines” the same way and gradually St Valentine became the patron of lovers.

The duke of Orleans, during the battle of Agincourt, has been sent to the prison in the Tower of London. Many historians believe that on February 14 he sent a rhyming love letter to his wife from his cell and this date become famous around the world for exchanging love messages.

Other legend say that The Christian church decided to celebrate the Valentines day on February 14 in an affords to avoid the pagan Lucopercical festival in ancient Rome who was dedicated to Juno - Lupa-the Queen of roman Gods and Goddesses or also as the Goddesses of women and marriage. During this Festival the names of all young girls were placed in a box. Each unmarried men drawn a name and the couples would be considered as a love partners to the end of the festival. But most of the couples really felt in love and married in the next year.
