Valentines Day Traditions
People believed that if you cut an apple and count the seeds, you will know how many children you will have. Also you can understand how many children you will have if you take a dandelion that has gone to seeds and blow the seeds into the wind. Than you have to count how many seeds have remained on the stem. Their number is the number of children you will have.
On Valentines Day you will know the name of the person you will marry if you think for the names of the possible candidates while twisting the stem of an apple. The name that you were thinking for in the moment when the stem fell off, will be the man you will marry.
Some people believed that if on Valentines day a girl saw a robin, flying overhead she would marry a sailor, if she saw a goldfinch she probably would marry a millionaire but if saw a sparrow her husband would be poor but she would be very happy.
Long ago it was believed that if a woman receive a Valentines Day clothing gift from a man and if she keeps it, she will marry him.
Unmarried men and women in the Middle Ages drew names to see who will be their Valentine for this holiday and would wear them on their sleeves for one week.
In Wales the young people who were in love sent as gift to the person they liked wooden spoons decorated with hearts, keyholes and keys, which secret meaning was “Unlock my heart”.
Long time ago the kids used to wear adults cloths on Valentines Day and went singing in each house:
“Good morning to you, valentine;
Curl your locks as I do mine—
Two before and three behind.
Good morning to you, valentine.”
